Lifestyle habits that make you more vulnerable to diabetes



New Delhi: Type 2 Diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a global public health problem. Genetics play important role in diabetes, but having an unhealthy lifestyle not only increases the risk of developing diabetes which is evident as increasing prevalence of obesity and T2DM in young individuals. Dr Danendra Sahu , Consultant Endocrinology, Fortis Hospital Shalimar Bagh, revealed that include diet, exercise and sleep are the lifestyle factors that influence diabetes. Also read: Foolproof measure to tackle gestational diabetes among pregnant women Unhealthy lifestyle choices The expert said, “Consumption of diet rich in refined carbohydrates, processed food, sugar sweetened beverages is unhealthy. Irregular eating patterns like skipping breakfast, frequent snacking increase risk of metabolic diseases. Inadequate exercise leads to increasing body weight and thereby increased risk of diabetes.” Inadequate sleep causes unhealthy night snacking, impairs insulin sensitivity and causes stress and anxiety. Smoking not only harms the lungs but also increases the risk of developing diabetes. Smoking also worsens blood glucose and increases risk of heart disease. Manage diabetes with lifestyle factors Healthy diet includes consumption of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, poultry and fish. Regular eating patterns and watch on portion size is important. Dr Sahu said, “Foods that need not be avoided include fried and processed food and sugar sweetened beverages. A healthy way to plan diet is the plate method where one half of the plate contains non starchy vegetables, on fourth contains protein (veg or non-veg) with grains limited to one-fourth of the plate. Regular exercise improves insulin sensitivity and enables better control of diabetes and it even prevents progression from prediabetes to T2DM.” Also read: Daylight exposure can help improve type 2 diabetes symptoms, find study Weight loss with the help of diet and exercise, especially in obese individuals improves insulin sensitivity and stabilizes blood glucose levels. It also enables achieving reversal or remission of T2DM. Regular and adequate sleep and avoiding smoking are important part of healthy lifestyle. Following a healthy lifestyle not only prevents progression from prediabetes to diabetes mellitus, it also stabilizes blood glucose levels and even helps in reversal or remission of T2DM.
