Dr Michael Mosley shares a unique technique for sharp memory

New Delhi: Dr Michael Mosley has recently revealed a new technique a simple technique, which could could work wonders to boost memory and even problem-solving abilities. The trick, which has its roots in China, is an ancient practice that involves walking but not the way one usually does – as per the UK-based doctor and author, taking 100 steps backwards could be as good as 100 steps forward. While talking about the same on his podcast Just One Thing, Dr Mosley said that one can do it on a clear path or even on a treadmill to ensure safety outside and at home. While walking backwards, one could also reap benefits for back pain issues, balance and short- term memory, and this is also backed by research. How does walking backwards sharpen memory? Researchers from the University of Roehampton in the UK asked 100 volunteers to walk forward, backwards or stand still while watching a video. They discovered that the group which walked backwards noted more consistent memory of the video than others. Another study of the similar type noted the same. Researchers also saw that stepping backwards is one of the best ways to mobilise the brain’s resources. Although it is not fully clear as to how and why walking backwards is beneficial for memory, the activity is said to activate different parts of the brain. The prefrontal cortex, which is a key area for executive function like problem solving and decision making, is active when one walks backwards. This technique can be a little challenging at the start, but one can start slowly and then build up for longer durations. According to experts, one can start by doing the same for a minute or two and then add a minute every second day. But it is also important to be mindful of the place to avoid accidents.
