Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Gurpurab, marks the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. It is one of the most sacred festivals celebrated with deep devotion and gratitude across the world, especially by the Sikh community.
The Birth of a Divine Messenger
Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in 1469 in Talwandi (now Nankana Sahib, Pakistan). From an early age, he displayed divine wisdom and compassion. His teachings transcended religion, caste, and boundaries — spreading the universal message of One God, truthfulness, equality, and selfless service.
The Message of Guru Nanak
Guru Nanak Dev Ji emphasized three golden principles that serve as the foundation of a meaningful life:
1. Naam Japna – Remembering God through meditation and keeping Him in one’s heart.
2. Kirat Karni – Earning an honest living through hard work and righteousness.
3. Vand Chakna – Sharing with others and serving humanity selflessly.
These principles are timeless and relevant even today — reminding us that spirituality is not about rituals, but about living with compassion, humility, and truth.
How Guru Nanak Jayanti is Celebrated
The celebration begins with Akhand Path — a continuous 48-hour recitation of the Guru Granth Sahib. On the day before Gurpurab, devotees participate in Nagarkirtans — joyous processions led by the Panj Pyare (Five Beloved Ones), singing hymns and spreading the Guru’s message of peace.
On the main day, Gurdwaras are illuminated, and Langars (community kitchens) serve free meals to all, symbolizing equality and service to humanity.
The Eternal Relevance
Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s teachings are a guiding light for humanity. In an age of division and restlessness, his message of Oneness, love, and **universal brotherhood** reminds us to rise above ego and live as children of one divine Creator.
A Message for All
On this sacred day, let us remember Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s divine words —
“There is no Hindu, there is no Muslim — all are children of One God.”
May the light of Guru Nanak’s wisdom guide us towards peace, kindness, and unity.
Happy Guru Nanak Jayanti!
