Asda gives timescale for opening of convenience store in Colwyn Bay
ASDA has confirmed when it will convert the Co-op petrol forecourt in Colwyn Bay into its own branch. The supermarket giant made the £438million acquisition of Co-op’s 132 petrol stations and convenience stores in 2022. Three sites in North Wales were part of the deal - Old Colwyn (Cefn Road), Rhuddlan (Rhyl Road) and Coedpoeth near Wrexham. Of the 116 orecourts that are currently run by the Co-op but are to be converted, the sites in Colwyn Bay and Rhuddlan are set to be converted to Asda Express stores by the end of March 2024. The converted Asda Express sites will stock up to 3,000 branded and own-label products to suit a broad range of customer needs. New Asda Express stores will be solely owned and operated by Asda, but will be run separately from the Asda On the Move convenience sites, which are located on garage forecourts owned and operated by EG Group. Mohsin Issa, co-owner of Asda, previously said the supermarket saw convenience stores as a "significant growth opportunity for the business", part of plans to make Asda the UK’s second-biggest supermarket chain.
