Photos: Mountain View’s Shoreline Park celebrates 40th anniversary

It’s a recreational oasis. An entertainment venue. And a public works success story. On Sunday, families flocked to Mountain View’s bayside to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the creation of Shoreline at Mountain View, a 700-acre wildlife refuge, lake and recreation spot built largely on the site of a landfill. Related Articles Four years after its 1983 opening, a Mercury News article reported that “the hiking-trail, concert-stage, wildlife-preserve, sailing-lake, golf-links showpiece” had overcome early problems (methane gas, among them) and beat out 66 other contestants from around the state to win the prestigious Helen Putnam Award for public works from the League of California Cities. The approximately $12 million construction cost was paid for by revenues from the city-owned dump that operated between 1970 and 1983 on the site. Shoreline is open daily from 6:30 a.m. until 30 minutes after sundown. For details on activities and amenities, including the lake, dog park, kite-flying area and cafe, go to .
