Family share update on Olympic gold medal hero Mary Lou Retton’s fight for life



The daughter of gymnastics gold medallist Mary Lou Retton has released an update on her mother’s health as she fights for life in intensive care. The 55-year-old American after contracting “a very rare form of pneumonia”. She was admitted to hospital last week and while she is still in intensive care, her condition is improving. Prayers have been felt and have been answered,” Kelley wrote. “Although she remains in the ICU, her path to recovery is steadily unfolding. Her fighting spirit is truly shining!” “Her breathing is becoming stronger, and her reliance on machines is diminishing. “Though it’s a lengthy journey, witnessing these improvements is incredibly heartening. She’s responding so well to treatments.” A page had raised over $430,000 on Monday, smashing its goal of $50,000 out of the park, from more than 8000 donors. Retton shot to fame at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles where, as a 16-year-old high school student, she won five medals, including one gold, competing in gymnastics for the USA. She won two silvers and two bronze, but her gold came in the individual all-around competition. The performance made her one of the most popular athletes in the United States. Retton retired from the sport just two years after her only Olympic appearance. In 1997, she was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame and served on the President’s Council for physical fitness and sports under US president George W. Bush.
